Here at Nestera, we know a thing or two about bird boxes! We have decades of experience with nesting birds and have built strong ties with organisations like the RSPB, BTO and wildlife trusts right across the UK.Β
If youβre wondering about the best place for your bird box, read on to discover some dos and donβts forΒ siting your nest box and to find out whereΒ differentΒ bird species like their nest box placed.Β

Unless there are buildings or trees to provide shade during the day, faceΒ yourΒ nest box between north and east. This will avoid direct sunlight and the wettest winds and should also provide optimum light for your bird box camera.Β The perfect height forΒ aΒ bird boxΒ depends on the species the box is intended for or what type of bird youβre hoping to attract:Β
- BirdΒ boxes forΒ tits,Β sparrowsΒ orΒ starlingsΒ should beΒ placed 2-4 metresΒ off the ground onΒ a tree or a wall.Β
- Open-frontedΒ birdΒ boxes forΒ robinsΒ andΒ wrensΒ shouldΒ be lower - ideally 2Β metresΒ or lessΒ from the ground and well hidden in vegetation.Β
- Spotted flycatchersΒ likeΒ a bird boxΒ to be 2-4Β metresΒ off the groundΒ and preferablyΒ sheltered byΒ foliageΒ but with a clearΒ entry point.Β
- WoodpeckerΒ nest boxesΒ should be locatedΒ 3-5Β metresΒ high on a tree trunk with a clear flight path and away fromΒ anything that may cause aΒ disturbance.Β
- House sparrowsΒ andΒ starlingsΒ will happily nest in boxes placed high off the ground under the eaves of buildings. Since they nest in loose colonies, several bird boxes can be spaced out on the same side of a building. However, try to avoid areas whereΒ house martinsΒ have been known toΒ nest.Β
Several bird boxesΒ placedΒ close together may be occupied by the same species if theyΒ areΒ locatedΒ on theΒ edge of adjoining territories with an abundance ofΒ foodΒ nearby. This tends to happen more often in the countryside than in residential gardens,Β where you would normallyΒ only expect one nesting pair of any one species.Β
The exceptions to this are houseΒ martins,Β tree sparrowsΒ andΒ house sparrows, which areΒ allΒ colonial nesting birds.Β When you put up more than one bird box, you can usually expectΒ to attractΒ several species.Β
What is the Best Way to Hang My Bird Box?Β
When securing a bird box, aim to tilt it slightly forwards so that any driving rain will hit the roof and bounce away, instead of penetrating the entrance hole.Β
WhenΒ attachingΒ a bird boxΒ to a tree, avoidΒ usingΒ nails as theyΒ may damageΒ it;Β nylon bolts, cable tiesΒ orΒ a strip of wire around the trunk or branch are good alternatives.Β Consider usingΒ a piece of hose or section of car tyre around the wire to preventΒ anyΒ damage to the tree. Remember that trees grow in girth as well as height, so check the fixingΒ regularly.Β
What is the IdealΒ Time of Year to Put up a Bird Box?Β
Tits begin prospecting for nesting sites in February and early March, with mostΒ other birds beginning to investigateΒ nesting sites during the autumn and winter,Β usuallyΒ looking for a suitable location to feed and roost. They often use the same place for nesting the following spring.Β

How Do I Clean My Bird Box?Β
MostΒ nestsΒ are known to harbourΒ fleas andΒ variousΒ other parasites, which canΒ go on to infestΒ newly hatchedΒ orΒ young birds the following year.Β
OldΒ disusedΒ nestsΒ shouldΒ be removedΒ from bird boxesΒ from August onwards (or onlyΒ onceΒ you are 100% certain theΒ birds have stopped using the nest).Β RemoveΒ your bird box camera from the nestΒ box before removingΒ any nesting materials. ThenΒ clean the bird box out with boiling waterΒ to kill any remaining parasites. Β
Ensure the nestΒ boxΒ is thoroughlyΒ dry beforeΒ reinstalling the bird box camera orΒ replacing the front or lid.Β Never use insecticidesΒ orΒ flea powdersΒ in a bird box.Β
